This is to give the basic need to know details on getting you your best items in the game.
All those samples that you find from anomalies that are crowding your bank . . . They are useful! Even the rare ones which are now tradable.
Farming Samples:
besides scanning in each mission (V by default) and tracking down each sample (each map change may re-spawn samples) the best way to build up a decent supply are clusters/nebulae/etc. (those places you get sent to explore).
each point in these places may be either a Mission Map (Enter Unknown Space) or a data sample (Scan Anomalous Readings). Simply fly around the zone and scan each one and pass up the zones. Play the mini game well as it may cause a rare drop (Blue sample that looks like a fingerprint) These will re-spawn every few minutes or so. You may have other people competing for samples so a highly maneuverable ship can help.
Samples:
Each Sample has good for a specific Mk of items (Red is also used for all schematics)
Red Mk II
Aqua Mk IV
Green Mk VI
Blue Mk VIII
Yellow Mk X
Violet Mk IX
Particle traces can be found in any Anomaly as a random reward for the mini-game
Crafting:
Even if you do not plan on crafting yourself it is good to understand the basics.
Crafting items may only be done at Memory Alpha in Alpha Centauri but the crafting list can be seen at anytime via you minimap drop down under "R&D Progress"
Each Item will have a few details. On the left is a large number from 10-50. This indicates how many crafting points you will earn for crafting the item. Next is the icon and description. The far right shows what is needed by the crafter to create an item. If you hovor your cursor over the needed items it will pop up a window with a bit more details of what is needed. These are the items you must take to your local friendly Crafter.
The window itself has 4 tabs:
Personal Equipment - kits, armor, weapons . . .
Starship Weapons - Beam Arrays, Cannons, Torpedoes . . .
Starship Equipment - Consoles, shields, engines . . . .
Schematics
Each of these will have a further drop down in the window to limit to you particular category
Recipes will follow a simple formula
Schematics: 10 Basic samples Mk I (Red)
Green (uncommon): 20 Basic Samples + schematic
Blue (rare): 30 Basic Samples + schematic
Purple (very Rare): 30 Basic Samples + 1-3 Rare samples
Aegis (very Rare/Borg): 60 Basic samples + 3 Rare Traces + schematic
Rare Traces will not be taken from the fleet bank unless the item is of XI Quality. If you wish to have an item crafted at very rare you must supply your own rare particle traces.
Becoming a Crafter:
This is reasonably easy since episode 3. and if you wish to start but are well past using Mk II items, you can assist your crafter by making the schematics for the items you request. Each schematic earns you 10 crafting points and the max is 1650. This can be a start for you but to get there you need to make bigger and better items. You do not have to make items at your Mk Level but can work on lower items and either sell to the exchange, or donate to fleet.
the better quality an item the more crafting points earned.
10 points: Schematics and Consumables
20 points: Green Uncommons
30 Points: Blue Rares
50 Points: Purple Vary Rares
If you have alts it can be a good idea to make them items to level up your crafting and you can hit master crafter in no time.
Regards

K'lale will select orders in the following method
Send the required materials via starfleet mail along with the specific item you are looking to receive
Use a separate mail for each item although quantity can be more then on per mail
Example:
3 Poloran Heavy Cannons MK VIII - 1 Mail
1 Phaser Beam Array Mk IV & 1 Quantum Torpedo Launcher Mk IV - 2 mails
I Will then reply with the item in question via the same mail as soon as i get a chance to craft it.
